Statement of intent:
My theme is Light and dark for my GCSE photography exam. I will be focusing on the different types of light and dark and the shadows I am able to create and how it makes an impact on my images. In order to produce a creative and realistic final piece I intend to carry out multiple photo shoots on light and dark and the inspirations I get from other photographers to give me more ideas to try out, I will use one of my friends to be my model for this project and I will use some sort of material over a light to create a shadow effect on my models face which is the aim I am trying to achieve. I will create a mind map showing shadows and patterns on peoples faces to create a range of creative images. I will take my images in school and I will try to take some out of school aswell too show a range of pictures with different backgrounds. I will also bring in my own props such as curtains or some type of lace or material to be able to get the effect of shadows on peoples faces, I might also bring in lights for my model to wear which might help with showing shadows.
I intend to take lots of images by doing multiple photo shoots to show a variety of ideas and images. I will take a number of photo shoots on the theme light and dark using Amina as my model, we will go to different places in the school to see wear the lighting is best or where the darkest room is so we can create a shadow effect using a lamp and placing a material over it.
The photographer I intend to research is called Ferdinando Scianna who is a photographer that takes pictures of lace shadows on his models face, this photographer is who inspired me to choose this theme. I will also research multiples of images off the internet that link to my theme of light and dark and shadows, this will help me to capture images of shadows because I will know what it is that my images should look like. The techniques that I will use on the cameras will be different white balances, a variety of iso, aperture and shutter speed to make my work look more realistic and professional.
By doing this project I hope to learn more about how to use a camera properly and know how to change it when I want to take different types of images, I also hope to learn more about using Photoshop incase I choose to edit my images a little bit.

Mindmap:
I have chosen to do the theme Light and Dark because it looks interesting and I think I will do well with this project because it has many types of styles and different types of pictures can be taken with the theme light and dark. The photographer that inspired me to pick this theme was Ferdinando Scianna because I really like his photographs because his images include shadows and natural lighting which I find intriguing. The skills I would like to develop from this project will be to be able to use different props to create shadows on a persons face by using natural lighting, spotlight or flashlights.

My eyes are drawn to the jug of orange juice on the left and the pastries on the right side. The black background makes us focus on the lighted areas such as the food, they have used a spotlight to make the lighting stronger and have also used a tripod to take the picture so that it is not blurry, they have probably used a fast shutter speed to take this image. This image uses the rule of thirds, there is a sweet spot of the top right where the jug is showing, there is a sweet spot on the right where the pastry is showing and on the bottom left. There is a strong leading line against the edge of the table which makes it look deep and 3D and the contrast between the blue and orange makes it look stronger. It is a studio shot and the light is being shone from the top right, I can tell this by the white light on the orange juice jug and on the pastry. In my opinion they would have taken a long time adjusting the aperture and shutter speed to make the image look perfect.

Shoot 1 plan:
Photo shoot 1
Dominos:
Best image:This is my best image because it shows the lighting contrast between light and dark as the the further the domino's go down the darker the light gets and the nearer you are to the domino's the more lighter the light is. It also makes the image look more interesting as it looks 3d. |
Worst image:This is my worst image because the background is yellow and the image looks a bit over exposed which makes doesn't make the picture look nice or appealing. The camera wasn't on the correct settings which means the picture is not in focus.

Worst image: |
Best image:I think this is my best image because it shows the shadows in the background which is my theme for this project and is what I was aiming for, I think this makes the image look interesting and fascinating. |
Worst image:I think this is my worst image because you are able to see the tape on the bottom of the picture under the dominoes which doesn't make the image look very nice and parts of the image looks a bit over exposed. |

Worst image: |
I think this is my best image because the colour of the light that is shining on the dominoes and in the background makes the image look more interesting and draws our eye to the shadows in the background. |
I think this is my worst picture because it looks a bit under exposed and a bit too dark this means you are unable to see the objects in this image because it is too dark and there is not enough light. |
Photo shoot 2:
This is my best image because it shows the patterns on the face which is what I wanted to do because it shows the lace shadowed on her face. It is also not blurry and it is focused and clear. |
This is my worst image because it is blurred and unfocused which makes the image look unprofessional and unclear.
