Statement of Intent
My chosen theme for my GCSE photography exam is landscapes, I have chosen to study this theme because I find it really interesting and I can take so many different pictures to make my work unique and stand out, it also helps me to be able to explore and visit new places that I haven't been to before. I will visit places like Angelesy, Manchester ndcany more to be able to achieve a variety of images, I will also take images when I go to Cornwall to improve my website.
In order for me to create and produce a professional and unique final piece for my theme 'Landscapes' I will research a lot about it to understand as much as I can in order to achieve creative images. The research I intend to carry out is to look at a variety of different photographers and different images based on my theme. A photographer that I will look at will be Glyn Davies and I will look at how he has edited his images to make them stand out and look more appealing.
I intend to take a variety of photo shoots to explore Landscapes which means I will travel to different places in school and outside of school so that i am able to capture the best images I can. I will take inspiration from other photographers work and also my own work to show my creativity.
I intend to visit places such as Angelesy, Manchester and many other places to show that i can achieve unique and successful images.
During this project I will use many different techniques with the camera and with photo shop to develop my work to a higher standard. The techniques on the camera that I would like to use would be different ISO, aperture, white balance and shutter speeds to show that I have a better understanding of how to use a camera to achieve interesting and creative images without them being blurry and out of focus. I would also like to use photo shop to edit my photographs that I have taken to get them to a better standard.
In this project I would like to learn more about Landscapes and how different photographers achieve such different images to other photographers and how they make them unique and their own. I also hope to learn more about the different techniques in photo shop to help edit my work such as cropping things, moving things and many more because I think this will help my work to look different to my friends work.
I see my final format as being a group of my final images from my best photo shoots in this project to show that I am able to edit my work and make them look professional and also to try and achieve a good grade in my photography work.
Anglesey mindmap
I am going to take images of these ideas such as the lighthouses, beaches and the landmarks because I think that they will help me achieve professional looking images and different outcomes. I think that the weather will have an impact on my images because if the weather is raining and the sky is a bit dull then my images will not have as much of a higher outcome as they would if the sky was sunny and clear, however I could edit my images in photo shop later on to try and make them to a higher standard to achieve a better grade.

Waves:
Best Image:I think this is my best image because you are able to see the waves in the background clearly crashing against the rocks which makes the image look more interesting. Also it is a deep depth of field which makes the image look more proffessional. |
Worst Image:I think this is my worst image because it looks a little bit bleached out as the colours are hard to see clearly which makes my image look unprofessional. |
Seaweed:
Best Image:I think this is my best image because it shows the waves splashing and the foam from the water this means that is was taken on a slow shutter speed, Also the the image focuses on the seaweed and blurres the waves out a little bit. |
Worst Image:I think this is my worst image because the image does not look very nice and professional. The image looks dirty and it doesn't focus on anything. |
Sand:
Pine trees:
Best image: |
Worst Image: |
I think this is my best image because the exposure is not too high and not too low and the weather was perfect this day as there is not a cloud in the sky and the sky is just blue. Also you can see the grass moving at the bottom of the image which shows it was taken with a fast shutter speed. |
I think this is my worst image because it looks a bit bleached out and you can't see anything clearly as the sun is shining right through the trees making the image look unclear and unprofessional. |
Grass:
Best Image:I think this is my best image because it shows I have used aperture because the background is blurred out and the grass is in focus and makes us focus on that part of the image. |
Worst Image:I think this is my worst image because it doesn't focus on anything in particular and its not a very interesting image. |

Simon Kitchin:
Composition
In my opinion I think Simon Kitchins went out to take this picture when the sun was going down, so this was probably taken in the evening at around 5 or 6 o clock. In the background you can see the lighthouse which is far in the distance, it is also placed in the centre of the picture which makes me think Simon Kitchins planned this picture. The effect this has of it being in the centre is that it draws your eyes to the centre of the picture and it makes you focus on it. Also in the background you can see the horizon and the separation of the sky and the ocean through the straight line which makes the image look as though it was split in half.
In the foreground you can see the rocks that the waves are crashing into which shows that the sea was probably a bit rough that day causing the waves to crash into the sides.
I think that this picture was taken on a slow shutter speed because you are able to see a smoky effect in the water and are able to see the sky lines which means that this was probably taken using a tripod to make sure that the picture didn't come out blurry.
Context
Simon Kitchin is an award-winning landscape photographer based in North Wales. He only began to take photography more seriously when he moved to North Wales in 1997, this allowed him to be able to take images of mountains and coastlines in Anglesey. His images have been published in numerous magazines, books and calenders with some success in photography competitions. The camera he uses is a Nikon D800 full frame DSLR, together with a range of Nikon lenses and Lee filters. Simon is author of the fotoVUE location guidebook, Photographing North Wales. He also takes images of different beaches in Anglesey such as Llanddwyn Beach, Holyhead Beach and Porth Dafarch Beach and lighthouses such as South Stack Lighthouse and Llanddwyn Lighthouse.
Connection
This image links to my work as I have been to Anglesey and taken places of the same location and I had taken inspiration from this picture to try and achieve more professional looking images. This image shows the South Stack lighthouse and the waves crashing against the side of the rocks which shows that it was clearly taken on a slow shutter speed. The picture shows a deep depth of field and the image is a very calm and relaxing image.

Landmarks:
Best Image:I think this is my best image because it is taken from a worms eye view which makes it look like we are looking up to it, also you can clearly see the colour of the sky and the object because the lighting wasn't too bright or too dark. |
Worst Image:I think this is my worst image because the picture looks a bit too dark and there is people in the background which I think ruins the image and also the sky is too bright and bleached out. |

When we went on our Anglesey trip we went late February which is around the end of Winter time/start of spring so the weather was not too cold and not too hot. I expected the lighting to be a little harsher because it was around winter however the lighting was softer probably because it was getting close to spring. On our trip to Anglesey we visited places like different beaches such as Trearddur Bay, Llanddwyn Beach, Holyhead Beach and Porth Dafarch Beach, we also visited lighthouses such as South Stack Lighthouse and Llanddwyn Lighthouse. This allowed me to have a wide range and variety of different and unique images showing that my work is consistent.
In the summer we will be going on a trip around Manchester and Salford to show the contrast between urban settings and rural settings. The images that I will take when we go on this trip will show a set of hectic images as it is in the city centre where there is lots of buildings and lots of people. The weather should be sunny and warm when we go as we are going in the summer which means that my images should be bright and harsh. We will go to places like cloud 23 in the Hilton hotel and the imperial war museum.

New buildings:
Best Image: |
Worst Image: |
I think this is my best image because it shows the shadows on the building reflecting the clouds in the sky which makes the image look unique and professional. |
I think this is my worst image because there is too much going on in this image with all the buildings and all the people walking around,it makes the image look unprofessional. |
Objects:
Old buildings:
I think this is my best image because it is in focus and it shows a lot of Manchester and the city. This image draws my eye to the bridge in the middle of the image. |
I think this is my worst image because it is too bleached out and there is nothing in focus as it is blurry. This makes the image look boring and unprofessional. |

During our time in photography we have been on many different trips to gather a variety of many different photos to develop our weebly page and make it look more professional and unique, earlier in the year we went on a residential trip to Angelsey to get pictures of the beach, lighthouses and a range of landscape pictures and then in the summer we went on a day out trip around Manchester and Salford. When we went to Angelsey we was able to capture images of the rural landscapes and nature where as in Manchester and Salford we took pictures of urban landscapes because it is a city and its busy. My favourite trip was the Angelsey trip because in my opinion it was a lot more calm and I preferred to take pictures of the rural landscapes than urban landscapes.
In Manchester and Salford we had to walk around the city centre and take pictures of the buildings whereas in Angelsey we travelled quite a lot to different beaches to capture pictures of multiple lighthouses and the sea to have a range of unique images that were different to other peoples. We was able to take images of the woods, waves trees and the sand.
I am looking forward to later on in the year because it will be Halloween, bonfire night and Christmas which means I will be able to take images of the fireworks and the snow to show a range of images in different types of weather conditions to make my photography page look unique.

My chosen theme:
I have chosen this theme because I think it looks interesting, effective to do and it might be challenging for me to do. I think that by doing this it will help me to achieve the grade I am trying to get. I will research this on YouTube to find videos that will help me with photo shopping my pictures to achieve this theme on my chosen image. The videos that I will find on YouTube will teach me how to change my images into looking like this. I could use my rural and urban images for this theme.
